Oh it’s sooo cold outside. It’s January in Utah.

In the capital city the average high temperature in Salt Lake City is 38 degrees during this month. It’s also the coldest month of the year. Many customers often ask us, how do you protect your garage door against the bitter cold? To that end we have three recommendations to assist you with that effort.

salt-lake-city-winter1. Remove Gunk From Tracks

First, you will want to remove any build-up of grease, stuff, dirt, gunk or anything on the garage door track. As the door moves up and down, debris can build on the track and rollers which will interfere with how it moves, opening and closing. With time, the tracks can become so clogged that the garage door won’t open or close at all. We recommend that to remove the gunk, debris, or other stuff to start with a cloth to wipe away any build-up.

2. Lubricate Moving Parts

Second, you will want to grease up or lubricate all moving parts connected to the garage door. You will want to use regular grade machine oil to lubricate the rollers, track, and hinges. These parts have a tendency to stick when the temperatures drop. When you have finished, be sure to wipe away any excess oil to prevent more build up. Your garage door should be cleaned and lubricated at least a few times per year, so it’s best to get into the practice of doing so. If you don’t want to perform the lubrication, qualified professionals like Accent Garage Doors can come by and perform a quick tune up for your home. Accent Garage Doors offers tune-up packages for our customers so don’t hesitate to ask about one.

3. Check for Needed Repairs

Finally you will want to look for any cracks that may need repair. As you are using the garage door on a daily basis, your garage door will see a lot of use. With a lot of use comes the need for regular maintenance. Have an expert like Accent Garage Doors assist with any repairs.
