Extreme weather can cause our common household appliances and more specifically garage doors to need a little extreme care and at times may require maintenance. With any and all appliances, finding ways to cool them down is important, having a fully functioning air conditioning system (view page) can provide this. It will help reduce the need for replacements and stop a potential hazard from occurring during heightened hot weather. This month, with temperatures still hoovering into the 90s, this can cause extra strain on your garage door. One component that is especially susceptible to extreme weather is your garage door springs.
What Is a Garage Door Spring?
Wikipedia explains that garage door springs assist the garage door in both the critical function of opening and closing the door. A garage door torsion spring system contains one or two springs that are tightly wound up with cable drums located on each end. Springs are mounted on the header wall of the garage door. When the garage door is opened, the springs unwind and the stored tension lifts the door by turning the shaft, thus turning the cable drums, wrapping the cables around the grooves on the cable drums. When the door is lowered, the cables unwrap from the drums and the springs are rewound to full tension.
Springs last anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 cycles depending on the model. A cycle consists of one time of both opening and closing the garage door.
