All About Garage Door Openers

In 2009 the US Department of Housing and Urban Development published a study highlighting the prevalence of home amenities across the United States. The study highlighted various characteristics about homes in the US. For instance, the average home is 1,800 with a median lot size of 0.27 acres. 99% of homes have complete plumbing service, and 98% of homes have a telephone.

The survey went on to list that 66% of homes had a garage or carport with new construction more likely to have these amenities.

Types of Openers

Electric garage door openers have been around for a while. In 1926 in Hartford City, Indiana, C.G. Johnson invented the first electric garage door opener. Since that time homes have been ever equipped with the garage door.

In the past as well as in an upcoming blog, we have/will discuss the four types of garage door openers. As a review the four types of garage door openers are: chain drive, belt drive, screw drive, and jackshaft.

  • Chain drive openers work similar to bicycle chain that connects the trolley to the motor. Belt drive openers use a rubber belt in place of a chain.
  • Screw drive openers use a long screw-rod in the track. In turn the trolley connects to this screw rod.
  • Jackshaft openers stand on the wall at either end of the torsion bar.

Longevity of Openers

Automatic garage door openers can last anywhere from 15 to 30 years. However, they are more likely to last reliably from 10 to 15 years. With newer technology and Wi-Fi connectivity, it may make sense to replace your garage door opener even sooner than that.

SPRING Into Garage Door Repair

Happy February and Happy Groundhog Day! It’s been a snowy winter thus far along the Wasatch Front with above average snowpack levels across the state. This is great news for both skiers and snow removal trucks. Hopefully this can continue to assist in keeping our Utah’s water levels high for the coming summer.

Today across the United States in the spirit of tradition many people will wonder if Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow. Will we have an early spring or six more weeks of winter? This tradition stems from the Celtic tradition of hibernation. Unfortunately the groundhogs record over the years only proves right around 40% of the time. We may also wonder if Phil’s prediction is just for one part of the United States rather than the entire country.

In either case as the spring will eventually come. You can rest assured that Accent Garage Doors offers garage door springs for its customers at any time of the year, rain, snow or shine. If you are not as passionate or as interested in springs as we are, you can also have confidence that we are here to answer any questions that you may have.

All About Springs

If your day job is not working with the mechanics of an automatic garage door opener, you may be wondering what exactly are garage door springs?

Wikipedia identifies that garage door springs assist the garage door in both the critical function of opening and closing the door. A garage door torsion spring system contains one or two springs that are tightly wound up with cable drums located on each end.

Where are springs located on the garage door?

Springs are mounted on the header wall of the garage door.

What do springs do?

Essentially they assist with the overall movement of your automatic garage door. When the garage door is opened, the springs unwind and the stored tension lifts the door by turning the shaft, thus turning the cable drums, wrapping the cables around the grooves on the cable drums. When the door is lowered, the cables unwrap from the drums and the springs are rewound to full tension. Hence, the springs work in tandem with your garage door opener.

How long do springs last?

Springs last anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 cycles depending on the model. A cycle consists of one time of both opening and closing the garage door. The average garage door opens and shuts around 1,500 times per year. This means that springs last anywhere from 6 to 10 years. This also means every 6 to 10 years you will want to get them replaced.
